We started the herb garden in 2014, it was one of the first things we did in the garden, we use a lot of herbs in cooking and in the first year we grew 75 different varieties of herbs, that included 11 different types of mint and 5 different types of basil.
The herb garden was positioned next to the pergola, as the pergola has a concrete base and the herb garden is covered in geotextile weed suppressant and gravel, this is a nice large area where we no longer have to cut the grass!
Over the years the number of types of herbs has decreased, we now only have 3 different types of mint because we were not using the other types, chocolate mint and orange mint are a bit of novelty, but they take up space, and have been replaced by herbs that we use more of.
We have gone from one Rosemary plant to 10 plants, we use a lot of it and it is incredibly easy to grow from cuttings. We are also increasing the amount of Sage and Thyme that we grow. Next year we need to get some boxes to grow a much larger quantity of Basil and Coriander in, we always seem to eat more of these herbs than we can grow, and they freeze very well.
Next year we will replace the Borage and the Sweet Rocket, we never ate them, but the bees like them!
